Find the right starting point
Båtførerprøven is the Norwegian boating licence exam; båtførerbevis is the licence. These free guides explain the route to the official exam and give you focused ways to practise. Kurskompis is an independent learning provider.
If you are new to boating in Norway, start with age and licence requirements. If you already know that you need the exam, read the exam guide and make a list of the subjects you need to practise.
Prepare in English, with the Norwegian context
The official exam is available in English at approved test centres. Our English guides keep Norwegian names where you will meet them in official registration and pair them with natural English maritime terms.
Work through chart navigation and navigation marks, then try the six free questions. Their explanations help you identify gaps; the small sample is not a full mock exam or proof of readiness.
Turn practice into a plan
Use the syllabus and study-plan guide to divide the work into manageable sessions. Finish each session by explaining one decision or calculation without looking at an answer. Revisit weak topics before taking another long practice test.
Before exam day, confirm your appointment, registration and permitted aids with your test centre. If you need a new attempt, use the resit guide to plan the waiting period and revise from your topic results.
Frequently asked questions
Are these guides free?
Yes. You can read the guides and try the six sample questions without signing in. They are independent preparation material, not the official exam.
Are the sample questions official exam questions?

Where should I start if I already have a foreign licence?
Start with the age and requirements guide, then check whether your existing qualification is recognised before booking another exam.
