50 questions in 60 minutes

The standard exam has 50 questions and a 60-minute time limit. You need at least 40 correct answers overall. You must also make no more than two mistakes in the questions classified as particularly important topics. A strong total score alone does not guarantee a pass.

For example, 42 correct answers with three mistakes in that safety-critical group is a fail. When you review a practice result, check which topics caused the errors as well as the total.

Choosing English and booking the official exam

English is available in the official exam; you select the language when starting at the centre. Contact an approved test centre to arrange your appointment and check practical details. Completing online lessons does not register you for an official exam.

If you do not have a Norwegian national identity number, contact the test centre about registration before booking. Read the test-centre guide in this collection for an exam-day checklist.

Practise the reasoning behind each answer

Use a timed practice session to find gaps. Afterwards, label each mistake: a missing rule, an unfamiliar English term, a calculation error or an overlooked condition. The label tells you what to practise next.

When an answer seems obvious, explain why each alternative is wrong. For a navigation problem, write the units and intermediate steps before checking the explanation. Being able to recognise a familiar answer is weaker evidence than solving a new version of the same problem.

Course completion and a boating licence are different

A preparatory course is optional. Self-study is possible, and you still take the official exam at an approved centre. Kurskompis provides independent preparation; a course result is not an official exam result or a boating licence.

Check current official fees when booking. The exam fee and any fee for a commercial preparation course are separate costs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take Båtførerprøven in English?

Yes. The official exam is available in Norwegian and English. You choose the language when starting the exam at the test centre.

Can I take the official exam at home?

Book through an approved test centre. An online practice test at home does not replace the supervised official exam.

Does 80% always mean I have passed?

No. You must also meet the separate pass requirement for particularly important topics: no more than two mistakes in that group.
