Changes to accepted identification

Bank cards, Norwegian Armed Forces ID cards and Norwegian seafarers’ discharge books will no longer be accepted at driver and vehicle licensing offices. This is shown as a future rule and does not change current answers before it takes effect.

Before practising in a car

For category B, the minimum age is 16. If you are under 25, the Basic Traffic Course requirement must be met. Carry the required documentation and valid identification.

  • Your accompanying driver must be at least 25 and have held the relevant category continuously for the last five years.
  • The car must display a clearly visible red L on a white background at the rear and have the required extra mirror or an approved screen arrangement giving the supervisor sufficient rearward visibility.
  • Use a category B vehicle and remove the L sign when practice ends.

Before the drive: agree one skill

Choose a quiet area and a goal such as positioning before a turn or observation at junctions. Give short instructions early so that the learner has time to act. Agree to stop somewhere safe if either person needs to discuss a difficult situation.

After the drive: turn experience into learning

Let the learner describe what went well before the supervisor adds feedback. Choose one difficult situation and find the theory that explains it. Record a goal for the next drive and increase difficulty gradually in line with the instructor's advice.

Other categories have their own requirements

Motorcycles, mopeds, tractors and heavy vehicles have different conditions for age, communication, supervision and vehicles. Use the rules for the category you are practising; the car rules do not automatically apply.

An example of a focused 30-minute session

Before setting off, choose a suitable route and one skill. During the drive, allow enough time for decisions and avoid overloading the learner with instructions. Afterwards, discuss one successful situation and one that was difficult.

Write down what to repeat. Gradually vary the surroundings so the learner can use the same skill in new situations, and agree progress with the driving instructor.

Frequently asked questions

Must the accompanying driver be a professional instructor?

No. Private practice is permitted when all the requirements are met.

How much should I practise?

Practise enough, and in varied enough conditions, to develop safe independent driving. Ask your instructor for concrete learning goals rather than aiming for a fixed number of trips.
