How to prepare for the driving theory test

A useful sign of progress is being able to explain why an answer is right in a new situation. Recognising familiar answer choices gives you less information about your understanding.

Changes to accepted identification

Bank cards, Norwegian Armed Forces ID cards and Norwegian seafarers’ discharge books will no longer be accepted at driver and vehicle licensing offices. This is shown as a future rule and does not change current answers before it takes effect.

Start by finding gaps

Try a short mixed practice session before making a study plan. Write down two or three topics that cause the most uncertainty. Distinguish unfamiliar terms, misunderstood rules and situations in which several choices seem reasonable.

A weekly pattern you can repeat

This is a suggested routine, not a promise that one week is enough.

SessionTaskEvidence of progress
1Read about a weak topic and create examplesYou can explain the main rule
2Answer varied questions on that topicYou can explain both correct and incorrect choices
3Mix the topic with previous materialYou recognise the rule without a hint
4Take a mock test without assistanceYour performance is consistent across topics
5Review mistakes and plan the next weekYou know what to practise next

Make the error bank useful

After an error, read the explanation and then recall the rule without looking. Change one feature of the example, such as a sign, road grip or visibility. If the reason for the answer changes, identify which distinction matters.

When are you ready?

Look for consistent results across different tests and understanding across the subject areas. If you only pass familiar questions, work more on explanations and new situations. Ask your instructor about topics that remain difficult.

The day before the test, prioritise calm revision and practical preparations: appointment, identification, travel plans and any agreed assistance.

Frequently asked questions

Is memorising the answer choices enough?

It is unreliable. You need to use the knowledge when questions and situations are presented differently.

Do several passed mock tests guarantee a pass?

No. They provide useful feedback, but they do not reproduce every condition or question in the official test.
