When can you obtain each driving licence category?
The minimum ages for learner driving, the theory test and the driving entitlement are not always the same. Start with the category you need and check its training route.

Changes to accepted identification
Bank cards, Norwegian Armed Forces ID cards and Norwegian seafarers’ discharge books will no longer be accepted at driver and vehicle licensing offices. This is shown as a future rule and does not change current answers before it takes effect.

These are the main rules. Professional driver education and existing entitlements can affect the applicable age.

The theory test is not always available six months earlier
The ordinary category B theory test can normally be taken from age 17½. For AM146, AM147 and S, you must be 16 because theory is the final test after mandatory training. The C1 theory-test minimum is 18. Use the official age table before booking.
Plan around your actual needs
A 16-year-old comparing a moped, a moped car and A1 should consider the vehicle, training and daily journeys. A future professional driver should choose a qualification route before planning around an assumed age limit.
Allow time for mandatory courses and genuine skill development. A birthday establishes an earliest possible age; it does not establish that you are ready to drive independently.

Can I practise driving a car at 16?
Yes, when the learner-driving conditions are met. The accompanying driver and the vehicle must also meet the requirements.
Can I obtain category A before 24?
Yes, through an eligible extension after at least two years with A2 and completion of the required training.
