A boating licence, SRC and radio licence are different
Båtførerprøven concerns operating a boat. SRC, the Short Range Certificate, concerns maritime VHF radio with DSC. A boating licence does not replace a radio operator certificate.
The radio licence concerns the radio installation, separate from the operator's competence. Use the Norwegian Maritime Authority's recreational boating radio guidance to clarify registration and licensing for your equipment.
What you practise in the course
Access includes 10 lessons, 210 questions including lesson checks, radio procedures and separate mock exams. Both languages are included. Pay NOK 299 once for 183 days of access.
- Channel use, listening watch and communication between vessels and shore.
- Call signs, MMSI and the phonetic alphabet.
- DSC and the distinction between distress, urgency and safety.
- The structure of radio messages and choosing the appropriate procedure.
A practical way to study
Choose a fictional vessel name and a supplied practice position. Write down what a listener needs to know: who is calling, where the boat is, what happened and what assistance is needed.
Speak the message aloud without transmitting on a real radio. Check the sequence against the lesson and use the official simulator for further practice. Never send practice distress alerts over the maritime radio network.
The official SRC exam and certificate
Sign in to the Norwegian Maritime Authority's seafarer portal and select the exam service. After passing, create and pay for the certificate application through the certificates and endorsements section. The authority also provides a simulator and a practice exam.
Buying a Kurskompis course does not register you for the official exam or issue a certificate. Check current fees, login requirements, available exam language and practical arrangements with the authority.
