ATV licences: the registration determines the requirement
Two similar-looking ATVs may be registered differently and require different driving entitlements. ATV describes a vehicle, not a separate Norwegian driving licence category.

The registered vehicle category determines which entitlement you need to check.
Start with the registration certificate
Find the vehicle group, maximum authorised mass, approved speed and number of seats. Then check which entitlement applies to that registration. A sales description or model name is not sufficient.
Common registrations to investigate
Use this as a checking method, not as approval to drive a particular vehicle.
- Moped registration: check the relevant AM entitlement and codes.
- Tractor registration: check T entitlements, speed restrictions and licence codes.
- Four-wheeled motorcycle registration: check category B and the vehicle's approval.
A licence is one part of the decision
Where you may drive, the required equipment, and whether passengers or a trailer are permitted need separate checks. Registration and a driving licence do not automatically authorise off-road travel.
An example before buying
You hold T and a seller describes an ATV as tractor-registered. Ask for the registration certificate and check its approved speed against the codes on your licence. Resolve uncertainty with Statens vegvesen before buying or driving it.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a dedicated ATV driving licence?
No. The requirement follows the vehicle's registration and your personal entitlement.
Can a moped licence be used for every ATV?
No. It only covers vehicles that fit the relevant registration and the rights shown on your licence.
