Is B96 enough for your caravan or trailer?

Find the maximum authorised mass of both car and trailer and add the figures. Then check the car’s towing capacity and the combination’s technical limits. Licence entitlement and vehicle capacity are separate checks; B96 does not increase the towing capacity in the registration document.

Ask the driving school to price mandatory training and any extra practice separately. Check whether the car and trailer are included and whether the quote is for B96 or BE. Do not book a separate B96 theory test: code 96 is obtained through training without a new driving test.

What the licence covers

The 4,250 kg limit applies to the combined maximum authorised mass of the car and trailer. It does not increase the usual category B limit for the car itself. The car's towing capacity and maximum train weight also apply. Read both vehicle registration certificates before deciding whether a combination is permitted.

Training and tests

B96 requires at least seven hours of mandatory training and no new driving test. Training includes coupling, checks, load securing and driving with a trailer. The minimum number of hours does not replace the requirement to achieve the learning objectives; you may need additional practice.

What to understand and practise

Use these topics as a checklist. Explain your decisions in your own words and ask a driving instructor about anything that remains unclear.

  • Check the licence limits and the vehicle's technical limits separately.
  • Inspect the coupling, lights, brakes and breakaway cable.
  • Explain how load position affects nose weight and stability.
  • Plan reversing and turning before entering a restricted space.

A practical example

A car with a maximum authorised mass of 2,500 kg and a caravan rated at 1,500 kg total 4,000 kg. That fits within B96. You must still check the car's towing capacity, permitted train weight and the actual load before setting off.

Costs and planning

Ask your driving school for an itemised quote covering mandatory training, additional lessons, any test vehicle and official fees. Compare the contents of each offer. A package price may not include all the individual practice you need.

This guide is free to read. Kurskompis does not provide a dedicated course or mock exam for this category, or its mandatory practical training.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a B96 theory test?

No. You obtain the extension through mandatory training without a new driving test.

Does Kurskompis provide mandatory B96 training?

No. This is a free guide. Complete the mandatory training with an approved driving school.

Does B96 cover a 4,250 kg motorhome?

No. B96 concerns the combined maximum authorised mass of a car and trailer. It does not raise the ordinary B limit for the vehicle itself. See the C1 guide for heavier motorhomes and check any individual entitlements.
