Which driving licence do you need for a motorhome?

Begin with the maximum authorised mass in the registration certificate. The number of beds, the vehicle's appearance and how lightly you pack do not determine the licence category.

Changes to accepted identification

Bank cards, Norwegian Armed Forces ID cards and Norwegian seafarers’ discharge books will no longer be accepted at driver and vehicle licensing offices. This is shown as a future rule and does not change current answers before it takes effect.

Match the licence to the motorhome

This overview assumes an ordinary motorhome approved for no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver. Check special codes and older entitlements on your own licence.

Maximum authorised massUsual relevant category
Up to 3,500 kgB
Over 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kgC1 or C
Over 7,500 kgC

B96 does not raise the car's own weight limit

Code 96 concerns the combined weight of a car and trailer. It does not increase the usual category B limit for the towing vehicle itself. A motorhome rated at 4,250 kg therefore cannot simply be treated as a B96 vehicle.

Check the load as well

Holding the correct licence does not make an overloaded motorhome legal. Include people, water, luggage, optional equipment and bicycles in the load calculation, and check axle limits. Weigh the vehicle when necessary.

Trailers and private use

Adding a trailer requires a fresh assessment of the combination; BE or C1E may be relevant. Private use of a heavy motorhome is also different from professional transport requiring YSK. Assess the licence category, medical requirements and purpose of the journey separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive a heavier motorhome empty on category B?

Not when its maximum authorised mass requires a heavier licence category. You cannot base the licence assessment only on the current load.

Do I need YSK for a private motorhome?

Private use is normally outside the YSK requirement. The correct driving entitlement and other heavy-category requirements still apply.
