B, B96 or BE: which trailer entitlement do you need?

Start with the registration certificates for both the car and trailer. Your licence entitlement and the car's technical towing limits are separate checks, and you must satisfy both.

Changes to accepted identification

Bank cards, Norwegian Armed Forces ID cards and Norwegian seafarers’ discharge books will no longer be accepted at driver and vehicle licensing offices. This is shown as a future rule and does not change current answers before it takes effect.

Car, automatic transmission or a trailer?

Start with category B, or establish the extension your car and trailer require.

The main rules side by side

This table describes ordinary newer entitlements. Older rights and special codes may differ.

EntitlementMaximum authorised massesTraining route
BTrailer up to 750 kg; a heavier trailer is allowed if car and trailer together are no more than 3,500 kgIncluded in category B
B96Car and trailer together up to 4,250 kgAt least 7 hours of mandatory training; no new driving test
BECategory B car and a trailer up to 3,500 kgRequired training and a practical test

Permitted weight is different from today's weight

Maximum authorised mass is recorded in the registration certificate and is used for many licence limits. Actual weight is what the vehicle weighs with its present load. An empty trailer may therefore still require an entitlement you do not hold.

A caravan example

A car rated at 2,500 kg and a caravan rated at 1,500 kg have a combined maximum authorised mass of 4,000 kg. That exceeds the ordinary B rule for trailers above 750 kg but fits B96. Next, check the car's towing capacity and permitted train weight.

Think about your next car or trailer

A heavier replacement car can change the licence requirement even when you keep the same caravan. If you plan to change either vehicle, compare B96 and BE against that future combination and ask a driving school about the full training cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3,500 kg always the combined limit for B?

No. B also allows a trailer rated up to 750 kg behind a car rated up to 3,500 kg. The combined 3,500 kg rule applies when the trailer is rated above 750 kg.

Does BE increase the car's towing capacity?

No. The vehicle's approved technical limits still apply.
