Medium motorcycle licence in Norway – A2

A2 is available from age 18. Motorcycles are limited to 35 kW and a power-to-weight ratio of 0.2 kW/kg. If restricted, the original power must not exceed twice the current power. Inspect the documentation before buying a motorcycle.

Changes to accepted identification

Bank cards, Norwegian Armed Forces ID cards and Norwegian seafarers’ discharge books will no longer be accepted at driver and vehicle licensing offices. This is shown as a future rule and does not change current answers before it takes effect.

Ordinary theory test
40 questions · 90 minutes · 34 correct

First motorcycle licence or an upgrade from A1?

If A2 is your first motorcycle licence, plan a first-time route. If you hold A1, bring evidence of your licence and experience to the driving school. Establish the training and tests you actually need before booking. The ordinary theory format below does not mean every A1 upgrade requires another theory test.

When considering a restricted bike, check both original and current power. A bike reduced from 80 to 35 kW fails the rule that original power must be no more than twice current power. Approval and the power-to-weight limit must also be satisfied.

How to prepare

Plan overtaking with an option to stay behind. Study how visibility and grip affect your margin. If upgrading from A1, confirm the specific training and test requirements rather than assuming the first-time route applies.

Theory test and language

40 questions · 90 minutes · at least 34 correct when a theory test is required.

Yes. The ordinary A2 theory test is available in English.

Using the online course

Choose English in the course view and work through the reading and practice questions. Explain your decisions before checking the answer. Keep a short list of Norwegian terms you need to recognise, such as vikeplikt, tillatt totalvekt and veigrep.

The practice questions are written for learning. They are not the confidential questions used by Statens vegvesen. A good practice score helps identify progress but does not guarantee a pass.

Training, prices and official requirements

Kurskompis provides optional theory practice. Driving lessons, mandatory courses, medical requirements and official tests are separate. For motorcycle categories, the course is shared between A1, A2 and A. YSK practice is not approved initial or periodic CPC training.

Before booking, confirm the category, your age and existing entitlements with an approved driving school or Statens vegvesen. Ask for an itemised training quote rather than assuming that a theory-course price is the total licence cost.

What the theory course includes

710 questions in total, including road-sign practice, all with explanations, plus 60 lessons. Study in Norwegian or English on your phone or computer. Access costs NOK 399 for 6 months (183 days), with no automatic renewal.

  • A learning plan helps you choose your next topic.
  • Topic practice and situation exercises connect theory with decisions.
  • An error bank, spaced review and mock tests show what to revisit.
  • Progress is saved to your account and follows you across devices.

Road-sign practice is included. The questions are written for learning and are not the official test bank. Mandatory driver training and official test fees are separate.

Frequently asked questions

Does this course give me a Norwegian driving licence?

No. It supports theory study. You must satisfy the official training and test requirements.

Are the official test questions included?

No. Kurskompis uses its own practice questions and explanations.

Can an A2 motorcycle be larger than 125 cc?

Yes. A2 depends on power, power-to-weight ratio and any restriction of original power. The A1 limit of 125 cc is not the A2 limit. Check the vehicle documentation.

How many mistakes are allowed on the A2 theory test?

The ordinary A2 test has 40 questions and requires at least 34 correct answers, allowing up to 6 mistakes. The time limit is 90 minutes. This is the official format, not the ten-question sample. Check whether your upgrade route requires a theory test.
