These are the main limits for two-wheeled motorcycles. Check the registration certificate and your personal entitlements; three-wheeled motorcycles have separate rules.
| Category | Usual minimum age | Main motorcycle limit |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | 16 | Up to 125 cm³ and 11 kW |
| A2 | 18 | Up to 35 kW and 0.2 kW/kg; restrictions on reduced-power motorcycles |
| A | 24 for direct access | No A2 power limit; earlier access can be possible after two years with A2 |
Tell your driving school which entitlements you already hold. The training and tests for an extension can differ from a first motorcycle licence. Completing two years with A2 does not automatically turn it into A: the extension requirements must still be completed.
For an A2 motorcycle with reduced power, its original power must not exceed twice its current power. The advertised power figure alone is not enough to confirm that a bike is suitable.
The ordinary A1, A2 and A theory tests offer English. Where a theory test is required, the motorcycle format is 40 questions in 90 minutes, with at least 34 correct answers. Confirm the test requirements for your particular training route before booking.
Practise explaining road position, observation, grip, braking and visibility. After a wrong answer, identify the missing information or rule before trying a fresh situation. A car licence does not remove the need to understand motorcycle-specific risks.
Kurskompis offers one shared motorcycle theory course for A1, A2 and A, with Norwegian and English learning content. Choose the practical training route for your intended category separately with an approved driving school.
The online course is optional theory preparation. Mandatory riding lessons, official tests and licence fees are separate. The questions are written for practice and are not taken from Statens vegvesen’s confidential test bank.
710 questions in total, including road-sign practice, all with explanations, plus 60 lessons. Study in Norwegian or English on your phone or computer. Access costs NOK 399 for 6 months (183 days), with no automatic renewal.
