C1: light lorries and heavier motorhomes

C1 is often relevant for a light lorry or a heavier motorhome. The permitted weight and approved vehicle category determine the requirement, rather than how large the vehicle looks.

C1 for a motorhome: entitlement and payload both matter

Check maximum authorised mass before choosing a licence route. Then consider actual mass with passengers, water, luggage and equipment. C1 can provide the entitlement for a heavier motorhome, but does not permit overloading. Any increase in the vehicle’s authorised mass must also be approved and documented.

C1 has a different theory test from C. Choose the C1/C1E course for C1-specific lessons, questions and mock exams, and complete the mandatory practical training with an approved provider. The C1E section is study material because C1E has no separate ordinary theory test.

What the licence covers

C1 covers vehicles with a maximum authorised mass over 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg, approved for no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver. A trailer may have a maximum authorised mass of up to 750 kg. For a heavier trailer, look at C1E.

Training and tests

C1 is a heavy vehicle category with its own training, medical requirements, theory test and practical test. Arrange the application and medical certificate early. Private motorhome use and professional transport have different additional requirements, so assess Driver CPC (YSK) according to the transport you will actually perform.

Official theory-test format: 30 questions, 75 minutes and at least 25 correct answers. The ordinary test is not offered in English, and Statens vegvesen does not allow an interpreter for heavy-category theory tests. If you need an assisted oral test with an examiner, apply with supporting documentation and confirm the available arrangements before booking.

What to understand and practise

Use these topics as a checklist. Explain your decisions in your own words and ask a driving instructor about anything that remains unclear.

  • Check height, width and weight before choosing a route.
  • Calculate payload and axle loads as well as available storage space.
  • Practise vehicle checks and understand the braking system.
  • Allow for a wider turning path and monitor blind spots.

A practical example

A motorhome is approved for 4,250 kg. B96 does not make it a category B vehicle because code 96 concerns a car-and-trailer combination. Check C1 and your personal licence entitlements before driving it.

Costs and planning

Ask your driving school for an itemised quote covering mandatory training, additional lessons, any test vehicle and official fees. Compare the contents of each offer. A package price may not include all the individual practice you need.

Kurskompis provides optional online theory practice for this category. It does not provide mandatory practical training, issue a licence or collect official test fees.

What the theory course includes

556 questions in total, including road-sign practice, all with explanations, plus 36 lessons. Study in Norwegian or English on your phone or computer. Access costs NOK 499 for 6 months (183 days), with no automatic renewal.

  • A learning plan helps you choose your next topic.
  • Topic practice and situation exercises connect theory with decisions.
  • An error bank, spaced review and mock tests show what to revisit.
  • Progress is saved to your account and follows you across devices.

Road-sign practice is included. The questions are written for learning and are not the official test bank. Mandatory driver training and official test fees are separate.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a dedicated C1 course here?

Yes. The C1/C1E course contains C1 lessons, explained questions and C1 mock exams. C1E is a separate study section because C1E has no separate ordinary theory test.

Do I need C1 for a motorhome?

Usually when its maximum authorised mass is over 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg. Check any special codes or older entitlements on your own licence.

Do I need C1E when towing with a C1 motorhome?

C1 permits a trailer with maximum authorised mass up to 750 kg. A heavier trailer normally requires C1E. Check both your licence entitlement and the motorhome’s approved towing capacity.

How many mistakes are allowed on the C1 theory test?

The ordinary C1 test has 30 questions and requires at least 25 correct answers, allowing up to 5 mistakes. The time limit is 75 minutes. This is the official format, not the ten-question sample.
