Check three weight limits before choosing C1E

The towing vehicle must fit C1, the combined authorised masses must fit C1E, and the vehicle and trailer’s technical limits must be respected. A combination below 12,000 kg is therefore not automatically permitted. List the figures from both registration documents before booking training or buying a trailer.

Bring your licence to the driving school so existing categories and codes can be assessed. C1E builds on C1 with its own practical training route. Do not assume the CE theory-test format applies; establish which tests are required in your case.

What the licence covers

With C1E, a C1 vehicle can tow a trailer rated above 750 kg when the combined maximum authorised mass does not exceed 12,000 kg. The towing vehicle must still be within C1. Technical limits for the vehicle, trailer and combination apply alongside the licence limits.

Training and tests

Training builds on C1 and includes handling the combination and a practical test. Confirm any exemptions and additional entitlements with Statens vegvesen using your existing licence details. C1E does not have the same test programme as CE simply because both involve trailers.

What to understand and practise

Use these topics as a checklist. Explain your decisions in your own words and ask a driving instructor about anything that remains unclear.

  • Check all relevant permitted weights in both registration certificates.
  • Practise coupling and uncoupling in a consistent sequence.
  • Allow for the trailer taking a different path at junctions and entrances.
  • Explain how poor load distribution can destabilise a combination.

A practical example

A light lorry rated at 7,000 kg and a trailer rated at 4,000 kg total 11,000 kg. This is within the C1E combined limit. The lorry's approved towing capacity and other weight restrictions still determine whether that combination can be used.

Costs and planning

Ask your driving school for an itemised quote covering mandatory training, additional lessons, any test vehicle and official fees. Compare the contents of each offer. A package price may not include all the individual practice you need.

This guide is free to read. Kurskompis does not provide a dedicated course or mock exam for this category, or its mandatory practical training.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need C1 first?

Yes. C1E extends your C1 entitlement.

Is there a separate C1E mock exam here?

No. C1E has no separate ordinary theory test. The C1/C1E course contains a dedicated C1E study section, while its mock exam follows the C1 format.

Is C1E the same as CE?

No. C1E retains the C1 limit for the towing vehicle and has a 12,000 kg combined limit. CE builds on category C. Both remain subject to vehicle technical limits.
