Driver CPC in Norway – YSK theory and training

YSK is professional driver competence for relevant goods or passenger transport in heavy vehicles. It is separate from the driving licence and from an operator licence. Initial training, competence upgrading and periodic training are different routes.

Ordinary theory test
50 questions · 120 minutes · 42 correct

Choose initial qualification, extension or renewal

Start with the work you intend to do and the qualifications you already hold. Goods and passenger transport are different competence areas. Initial training and extensions involve tests, while periodic training for renewal has no final exam. The term “CPC course” therefore describes different products.

Kurskompis offers optional theory practice with pathways for the full goods and passenger CPC tests. The free sample contains ten questions from the CPC course. Approved initial training, 35-hour periodic training and dedicated extension tests are not included. Follow the links to the relevant pathway or renewal guide.

How to prepare

Use a working day to connect driving decisions, scheduling, documentation and load or passenger safety. Establish whether you need goods competence, passenger competence or both. Mandatory training must be completed through an approved provider.

Theory test and language

Full test: 50 questions · 120 minutes · at least 42 correct.

English is not listed for the ordinary Driver CPC theory test, and Statens vegvesen states that an interpreter cannot be used for Driver CPC tests. English practice content remains a study aid.

Using the online course

Choose English in the course view and work through the reading and practice questions. Explain your decisions before checking the answer. Keep a short list of Norwegian terms you need to recognise, such as vikeplikt, tillatt totalvekt and veigrep.

The practice questions are written for learning. They are not the confidential questions used by Statens vegvesen. A good practice score helps identify progress but does not guarantee a pass.

Training, prices and official requirements

Kurskompis provides optional theory practice. Driving lessons, mandatory courses, medical requirements and official tests are separate. For motorcycle categories, the course is shared between A1, A2 and A. YSK practice is not approved initial or periodic CPC training.

Before booking, confirm the category, your age and existing entitlements with an approved driving school or Statens vegvesen. Ask for an itemised training quote rather than assuming that a theory-course price is the total licence cost.

What the theory course includes

706 unique subject questions, all with explanations, plus 36 lessons. Study in Norwegian or English on your phone or computer. Access costs NOK 599 for 6 months (183 days), with no automatic renewal.

  • A learning plan helps you choose your next topic.
  • Topic practice and situation exercises connect theory with decisions.
  • An error bank, spaced review and mock tests show what to revisit.
  • Progress is saved to your account and follows you across devices.

Choose the goods-transport or passenger-transport pathway. Some questions are shared; the total above counts each unique question once. Practice covers full CPC tests, not separate extension tests. It does not renew code 95 or replace approved initial or periodic training.

Frequently asked questions

Does this course give me a Norwegian driving licence?

No. It supports theory study. You must satisfy the official training and test requirements.

Are the official test questions included?

No. Kurskompis uses its own practice questions and explanations.

Does 35 hours of CPC training always mean renewal?

No. A 35-hour course can also be a compressed extension of competence, which has different requirements and a theory test. Confirm whether the offer is periodic training or an extension before booking.

How many mistakes are allowed on the YSK theory test?

The ordinary YSK test has 50 questions and requires at least 42 correct answers, allowing up to 8 mistakes. The time limit is 120 minutes. This is the official format, not the ten-question sample. These figures apply to the full CPC test; extension tests have a different format.
