From a truck to a combination: what needs separate practice

CE requires you to assess the entire combination through a turn, not only the towing vehicle. Sketch the path, showing trailer cut-in and possible overhang swing. Then identify the areas you must check and when to stop because visibility is insufficient.

Use the CE course for coupling, braking systems, load distribution, manoeuvring and the CE test format. The official CE test differs from the C test. The online course does not replace mandatory CE training or the practical driving test.

What the licence covers

CE allows a category C lorry to tow a trailer with a maximum authorised mass above 750 kg. You need C and normally must be 21. Qualifying professional driver education can allow a lower age. Vehicle approvals and road-specific weight limits continue to apply.

Training and tests

CE has its own training, theory test and practical test. Plan the licence and any required Driver CPC together if you intend to work as a professional driver. The C theory-test format is not the CE format, and preparation should cover the combination-specific learning objectives.

Official theory-test format: 30 questions, 120 minutes and at least 25 correct answers. The ordinary test is not offered in English, and Statens vegvesen does not allow an interpreter for heavy-category theory tests. If you need an assisted oral test with an examiner, apply with supporting documentation and confirm the available arrangements before booking.

What to understand and practise

Use these topics as a checklist. Explain your decisions in your own words and ask a driving instructor about anything that remains unclear.

  • Explain checks of the coupling system and connections.
  • Track the trailer's wheel path and overhang throughout a turn.
  • Calculate load distribution and check road restrictions.
  • Secure the area and plan the manoeuvre before reversing.

A practical example

The towing vehicle has cleared a junction, but the trailer follows a different path. Explain where the rear wheels will go, how the overhang moves and how you will keep pedestrians and cyclists in view until the entire combination has cleared the turn.

Costs and planning

Ask your driving school for an itemised quote covering mandatory training, additional lessons, any test vehicle and official fees. Compare the contents of each offer. A package price may not include all the individual practice you need.

Kurskompis provides optional online theory practice for this category. It does not provide mandatory practical training, issue a licence or collect official test fees.

What the theory course includes

556 questions in total, including road-sign practice, all with explanations, plus 36 lessons. Study in Norwegian or English on your phone or computer. Access costs NOK 499 for 6 months (183 days), with no automatic renewal.

  • A learning plan helps you choose your next topic.
  • Topic practice and situation exercises connect theory with decisions.
  • An error bank, spaced review and mock tests show what to revisit.
  • Progress is saved to your account and follows you across devices.

Road-sign practice is included. The questions are written for learning and are not the official test bank. Mandatory driver training and official test fees are separate.

Frequently asked questions

Does Kurskompis have a dedicated CE theory course?

Yes. The CE course contains lessons, explained questions and mock exams matching the CE format. Mandatory training and the practical driving test are separate.

Is the CE theory test the same as C?

No. CE has 30 questions with at least 25 correct required. C has 45 questions with at least 38 correct required.

Is category C enough for a semitrailer?

A normal tractor unit and semitrailer requires CE. C alone normally permits a trailer with maximum authorised mass up to 750 kg. Check registration details and any individual licence codes.

How many mistakes are allowed on the CE theory test?

The ordinary CE test has 30 questions and requires at least 25 correct answers, allowing up to 5 mistakes. The time limit is 120 minutes. This is the official format, not the ten-question sample.
